The Piper Super Cub PA-18 is known as being one of the ultimate bush planes whether it be on wheels, skis or floats. Developed in the late 1940's the Super Cub originally had a Lycoming 108 horsepower 0-235 engine. Over the years between 1949 and 1994 the Super Cub came from Piper with engine variants from a 95 horsepower to 160 horsepower.
Interestingly enough, because of the popularity of the Super Cub it probably has more after market conversions than almost any other general aviation airframe. Some of the most popular PA-18 alterations include propeller upgrades to the McCauley Borer Propellor, constant speed propellors, belly pods, larger tires (26 to 35 inch diameter) and baggage compartment kits among an almost endless number of mods.
The Piper Super Cub has also been the inspiration for countless reproductions and aircraft based on PA-18's original design. Among the most popular are the Cub Crafters line of aircraft, the Legend Cub and dozens of Super Cub inspired kits.
The airplane makes a great performing seaplane on straight or amphibious floats and is one of the more affordable seaplane options out there when it comes to the cost of acquisition and operational cost. The one area that is pricey is the cost of insurance, which is a result of the petition of the Super Cub being flown by bush pilots in challenging environments.
