Austin learned to fly floats in 2007, bought his own floatplane in 2010, became a CFI in 2013 and has never looked back. According to Austin, “Float flying is the best because you get to land in
nature and because you just have to look out the window and figure it out. There is no ATIS and there are no controllers to help.” From his 19th floor condo on the Seattle waterfront, Austin and
his wife watch the daily parade of seaplanes coming and going in the Pacific Northwest. Recently retired from The Boeing Company where he was architect of training systems for USAF programs, he
is a board member of the Washington Seaplane Pilots Association and looks forward to protecting and opening new waters in the Pacific Northwest and sharing the joy of seaplane flying with the
next generation of pilots. Austin is a frequent contributor to Water Flying and other aviation publications.
