Born and raised in Georgia, Troy Wheeler is a long-time resident of Lake Sydney Lanier, the largest lake in the state. Being an advocate for the SPA is the perfect marriage of his passion for aviation and his love for his lake home.
Troy seas the benefit of promoting seaplane accessibility to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi lakes and waterways as a positive for the area pilots, businesses, and communities. As the owner of Lanier Flight Center's two locations, and the Cessna Authorized Sales Representative for Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, Troy is immersed in the General Aviation world. He has been in aviation since 1982 when he started flying at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. He is celebrating 27 years with American Airlines and 12 years with Lanier Flight Center.
Troy has an ATP and is type rated in the CE-525, SA-227, B757, and B-777. he maintains a Commercial Single Engine Land and Sea, CFI, CFII, and MEI. Though he crosses the Atlantic in the cockpit of a Boeing 777 each week, he says that the acquisition of his Airplane Single Engine Sea may be the ticket to the most fun he has ever had in a plane. Troy's vision is to share this thrill with everyone in the aviation community.
Since 2013, Troy has co-founded the Lanier Seaplane Pilots Association to bring awareness to the compatibility of seaplane operations with water recreation on area lakes and waterways, specifically Lake Sydney Lanier in north Georgia. The LSPA has been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to find a mutually agreeable solution for the operation of seaplanes on Lake Sydney Lanier. It is Troy and the LSPA's desire to see Georgia become more open to options for area pilots and recreational enthusiasts regarding seaplane operations.
